Tonal range. The full scale from shadow to light.

Every luminance value from 0 to 255 is available. Nothing is clipped. Nothing is crushed where it should not be.

Tonal range in portrait photography refers to the span of luminance values present in the image. A portrait with full tonal range uses the complete scale from pure black to pure white in the correct areas, with rich midtone gradations between. A portrait with compressed tonal range looks flat, artificial, or over-processed. ThePortraitOS generates portraits with full, professionally distributed tonal range.

Tonal range is the foundation of portrait quality.

Tonal range is the foundation of portrait quality. A histogram that stacks entirely in the midtones (a flat, grey portrait) or that clips at both ends (blocked shadows, blown highlights) reveals either poor exposure control or poor AI generation. Full tonal range is a non-negotiable technical standard.

The 0.1% technical difference.

ThePortraitOS generates output with a tonal histogram that mirrors a high-quality studio portrait: a full spread from near-black in the deepest shadows to near-white in the brightest highlights, with the main tonal mass in the mid-upper range (luminance 100-200/255) where most facial tone information lives. No clipping occurs at either end except where the style intentionally calls for it.

What a tonal range portrait looks like.

The portrait uses the complete tonal scale appropriately: deep shadows where the lighting creates them, bright highlights where the light is brightest, and rich midtone gradations across the skin. The image has visual depth and richness.

Does tonal range differ between portrait styles?

Yes. High contrast styles use a wider, more extreme tonal range with deeper shadows and brighter highlights. Low contrast styles compress the range into the midtones. But within each style, ThePortraitOS maximises the tonal richness available to that aesthetic.

Is the tonal range preserved in JPEG output?

JPEG format supports 8-bit colour depth (256 values per channel). ThePortraitOS renders internally at higher bit depth and converts to JPEG with quality settings that preserve maximum tonal information within the JPEG specification.

Can I download a TIFF or high bit-depth output?

Premium output formats are available in the download options. The standard delivery is high-quality JPEG, which is sufficient for all digital applications and most print uses.
